I’ve been training for almost 12 years and I’m still refining and improving my bridge and my shrimp. Now just because you do these drills a few times each during the warm-up in class does not mean you are doing them correctly or to anywhere near their potential. They give a big bang for your training buck. Movements are versatile and can be woven into techniques. Flavio Canto, Judo Olympian and BJJ black belt, once said ‘Practise movements, not only moves.’ I now understand his reasoning. They are two of the most important examples in the collection of movements which 'sew' all your moves together. If grappling is a language, then bridging and shrimping can be considered the vowels. I once heard an interesting analogy which likened grappling to a language, and a sparring match to a conversation. It’s a much better long-term strategy, trust me. Forget about winning or losing - put your focus on learning and developing. You always have somebody on your ass, trying to take over the top dog spot, and sooner or later, somebody better than you comes along. But so what? Being the best is a fleeting and painful position to be in. ![]() You’re probably never gonna be the best guy in your academy. Let me let you in on a little secret: You’re never going to be the best jiu-jitsu fighter in the world. The ego wants to dominate and control and to win at all costs. I always have other BJJ instructors asking me things like ‘How can I teach my students to relax?’ It’s been my experience that the primary factor at play when a student is unable to practise in a calm and controlled manner is his or her own ego. It’s been proven that people learn fastest when they are relaxed. Not only that, but training with a super-tense competitive mindset slows your progress down. If you train without the ability to relax, sooner or later you will become exhausted or overtrained, and more likely than not, injured. The acquisition of this ability is paramount to your progress in BJJ. But if you learn and internalize these I guarantee that’ll you’ll be a better fighter. Another instructor would probably come up with a completely different list. Are these the only ‘basics’ you should know? Of course not. Sponsorship is available for exceptional children with the capability to commit to our program. How many times have you heard a BJJ guy talking about ‘the basics’? Everyone says stuff like ‘You’ve got to have good basics.’ But what does that mean? What defines a jiu jitsu technique as basic? I don’t have the answer to that question, but in this article, I have defined 8 basic jiu jitsu moves and fundamental skills that I feel are essential to the development of a good all-around grappling game. Our Kids BJJ program is operating at capacity, we have a waiting list for some age groups. Students age 9 and above have the opportunity to compete in local tournaments to test their skills and compete as a team. Live training is an integral part of the program for 7 years old and up and advanced 5/6 year olds. Life skills, conflict avoidance and street smarts are discussed in every class. Gracie Jiu Jitsu self defense techniques are taught, along with games that teach kids how to throw an opponent while on the feet and control an opponent on the ground Warm-ups are based on Ginastica Natural, animal movements and the fundamental movements of jiu jitsu (break falls, technical stand-ups, rolls, hip movements, bridge etc). We aim to develop goal setting, health, listening skills, respect, discipline, confidence and motor skills. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Self Defense for kids are divided into three different age groups: 5-6, 7-9 and 10-13 years old. ![]()
